Match Report - 12th November 2016

This weekend saw Warwick University host Cheltenham Cougars in the Minor Flags quarter final.

Flags, first introduced in 1884, sees teams from across the country compete in a knockout tournament, with the eventual winner lifting the trophy, an embroidered flag. Initially split by region and seedings, two more wins from Cheltenham would see them compete at the SEMLA Flags Finals in Reading, attracting lacrosse fans from across the south of England, and the chance to win the Minor Flag.

Both teams were light on substitutes this weekend and everyone was expecting to be exhausted by the final whistle. However, this didn't phase Cheltenham who seemed more up for the game and energy levels were evidently higher.

Within minutes of the first quarter, Cougars realised they were playing an inexperienced Warwick team and took full advantage with early goals from Carl Maitland, Matt Baldwin and Si Rogers.
Warwick simply could not get into the game in the first quarter, and the second quarter was no different.

Warwick were obviously able to compose themselves at half time, as what seemed like a different team emerged, putting Cougars under much unexpected pressure. Some fantastic defensive work and goalkeeping helped keep them at bay, but luck also wasn't on their side with the ball hitting the Cheltenham goal post on three occasions.
Fantastic transition play from Tom Franklin throughout the 3rd quarter allowed the defence to rest and get their energy back.

Warwick couldn't take advantage of the three penalties given away by Cheltenham in the 4th quarter, and instead defensive turnovers allowed Pete Smith to score his first lacrosse goal, and James Lloyd bag a well deserved birthday goal.

Final score, Cheltenham Cougars 15, Warwick Univeristy 0.

A convincing performance from Cheltenham, who worked hard throughout to earn a rare lacrosse clean sheet.

Goals from Carl Maitland, David Lennox, Matt Baldwin, James Lloyd, Pete Smith and Simon Rogers.
Player of the match - Tom Franklin; Tireless throughout, providing fantastic transition to settle the game and create goal opportunities.
Donkey of the day - Alex Evans; For giving himself a penalty, even though the referee hadn't called anything.

Next game Cheltenham are back at home for their third Ladder League match against Plymouth City.
